As described in WGDM/09-10_TOR_WGDM:

Tasks

  • To maintain links with the regional metrology organizations, seeking to ensure the involvement of member laboratories of the CCL in major comparisons in the field of length, thereby providing the means for assuring world-wide traceability of length measurements at the highest levels of accuracy.
  • To make recommendations to the CCL on the needs and priorities for additional international comparisons in length under the auspices of the CCL.
  • To act as a focus for the exchange of technical information on international comparisons of length standards and techniques, through the use of suitable Discussion Groups.
  • To ensure the coordination of CCL and RMO key and supplementary comparisons.
  • To approve Dimensional Metrology key comparison reports.
  • To facilitate the inter-regional CMC Review Process, by:
    1. establishing and maintaining lists of service categories, and where necessary rules for the preparation of CMC entries;
    2. agreeing on detailed technical review criteria;
    3. coordinating and where possible conducting inter-regional reviews of CMCs submitted by RMOs for posting in the KCDB;
    4. providing guidance on the range of CMCs supported by particular key and supplementary comparisons;
    5. identifying areas where additional key and supplementary comparisons are needed;
    6. coordinating the review of existing CMCs in the context of new results of key and supplementary comparisons.
  • To report to CCL.

Organization

The WG-MRA has several task forces and discussion groups.

  • The task forces deal with mostly ongoing tasks to support CIPM MRA activities according to the requirements of the CIPM.
  • The discussion groups deal with technical matters related to key comparisons or to technical fields of specific interest.
  • The task forces and discussion groups are not necessarily permanent; they work mostly by correspondence or in satellite meetings to the WG-MRA meeting. They report regularly to the WG-MRA.
  • The WG-MRA meets at the BIPM before each meeting of the CCL and – when required – in years between, usually at another place and preferably together with a conference or another event of interest for dimensional metrology.

Membership

  • The WG-MRA Chair is appointed by the CCL for a normal period of 4 years (can be re-appointed)
  • Full voting Members are nominated by the NMI members of the CCL; non-voting members are invited by the WG-MRA, through the Chair.
